Public Art Granite Benches

Granite Benches Project
Various Artists and Locations

Commissioned in 2003 as a joint project of the Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission and the Lake City Development Corporation

Ten massive abandoned slabs of granite were found wasting away on the site of the City's new Fire Station No. 3 on 15th Street. No one knows where the granite came from or how long it had been there. Rather than have the granite slabs removed when the City purchased the property, the Arts Commission suggested that they be used for benches. A call went out to local artists for their ideas and proposals. The city received 22 different bench designs from a total of six different artist/artist teams. The artist proposals were displayed for public comment during Art on the Green. The site locations and granite blocks were provided to the artists via a random lottery.
