The City of Coeur d’Alene is working with Kootenai County FireSmart™ and Cancourse to implement vital forest fuel reduction efforts within the Canfield Natural Area and the western section of Cancourse, down to the E. Shaddock Lane Trailhead. In late August, a hand crew successfully completed the first phase of the treatment, cutting and piling ground and ladder fuels.
The next phase, involving the burning of slash piles, is scheduled to start on Monday, November 11, 2024 weather permitting, and is expected to continue until November 15. For the safety of all, including workers and pets, the trail will be closed during the pile burning process. This closure is anticipated to last 3-5days from the start of ignition. We kindly ask community members to respect these safety closures.
Fuel breaks are essential tools for slowing the spread of wildfires and enhancing community protection and resilience during and after such events. The Kootenai County FireSmart™ Program provides education and financial support through grants from the Idaho Department of Lands, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, to facilitate these efforts.
