Club Drugs

Ecstasy

MDMA

We may also see an increase in the use and possession of "club" drugs, such as Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). This is a newer drug being found at Rave parties. Below is a list of information obtained from a community drug alert bulletin printed through the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Developed in the early 1900's as an appetite suppressant, however was never used or tested on humans. Taken orally in tablet or capsule form. Effects last 3-6 hours, however confusion, depression, sleep problems, anxiety and paranoia have been reported to occur weeks after taking the drug.

MDMA can increase the heart rate and blood pressure, as well as a sense of alertness. This is all similar to that of amphetamine. MDMA is a party drug. It enables the user to dance for extended periods of time. It may cause dehydration, hypertension, heart and/or kidney failure.

It can be dangerous in high doses; can cause body temperature to rise leading to muscle break down and kidney and/or cardiovascular system failure. MDMA use may lead to heart attacks, strokes and seizures in some cases. MDMA can produce long lasting permanent damage to the neurons that release serotonin and consequent memory impairment.
