City to relocate one glass collection bin May 8

The City of Coeur d’Alene will move one glass collection bin May 8 as it continues to assess the best locations for its new community glass reuse program.

Glass can now be dropped off by residents at the parking lot in Cherry Hill Park, 1525 E. Hazel Ave. The new location at 3525 N. Ramsey Rd., in the middle parking lot of the Ramsey Park, will open May 8.

The City is moving one bin from Blue Grass Park based on resident feedback to ensure the best location possible is used.

The City asks residents to follow these guidelines when dropping off glass:

  • All types of glass bottles and jars (clear and colored) are accepted.
  • Please remove lids, caps, plastic bags, and cardboard boxes before depositing glass.
  • Do not leave plastic or paper bags, cardboard boxes, or garbage at the drop-off sites.
  • Mirrors, windows, Pyrex, dishes, fish tanks, light bulbs, fluorescent light bulbs, or ceramics are not accepted.
  • Do not place items outside the glass drop box.
  • Glass is not acceptable in the City’s curbside recycling program.

Collections efforts at two locations began April 1 based on community feedback and after bringing on Coeur d’Alene Garbage as the City’s solid waste contractor in 2016. Depots for collection are utilized instead of curbside pickup because glass can break and intermingle with recyclables like paper or cardboard. Broken glass in the bins makes the other materials unusable and unable to be recycled. Shards of glass also pose a safety risk to solid waste workers and can cause safety risks on neighborhood streets or sidewalks.

The glass from the drop off collection program will be hauled to a crusher. The crushed glass will be used as a soil amendment or any other practical and affordable reuses.
