Warmer temperatures during the next week could cause localized flooding around Coeur d’Alene, and City crews are prepared to respond.

The City is encouraging community feedback to ensure awareness of any potential flooding issues as well. Anyone who notices localized flooding should call the Streets & Engineering Department at (208) 769-2234 or (208) 415-0400.

Localized flooding can occur due to snow and ice covering stormwater drains throughout the community. Even snow that has turned to slush can plug drains and may need to be cleared. Numerous City departments are prepared to address the issue, and crews are already out working to clear catch basins at various intersections.

With water over the roadways, these tips are encouraged:

  • Slow down when driving, even small amounts of water on roads can cause a vehicle to hydroplane.
  • Don’t drive over flooded areas if possible. When in doubt – turn around! If floodwaters on roadways are next to rivers or lakes, do not drive into the water as the road could be washed away.
  • Rapid thawing can cause pot holes in roads, please be aware of this to avoid tire and vehicle damage.
  • Again: Use caution when driving, slow down.

The City’s more rural residents are encouraged to also begin clearing any drains near their property as well.

Forecasts are showing temperatures above freezing Tuesday, January 17, through at least Saturday, January 21, with a few days above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This is likely to cause rapid thawing, which will help address narrower roads caused by our heavy level of snowfall, but it will also mean increased water flow throughout Coeur d’Alene.

People dealing with major emergencies like injuries or vehicle accidents should call 911. Please note that 911 is only for these major emergencies.
