Community invited to vacation rental workshop

The community is invited to discuss how to regulate vacation rentals at a public Coeur d’Alene Planning Commission workshop on January 24.

Commissioners will review a proposed ordinance that sets up several basic rules for these properties, also known as short-term rentals.

The ordinance was created at the direction of City Councilmembers after receiving community feedback on the issue. Development came after an initial joint workshop between the council and commission, and a community survey in which 650 residents and bus the owners participated.

The new regulations include a permit, having a responsible party available 24/7, and a two-day minimum stay being required. There is also a proposed exemption from the permitting process for owners who rent out their home twice per year or less for a maximum of 14 days. To see full ordinance details and other supporting documents, visit cdaid.org/vacationrentals.

About 69 percent of community survey respondents supported the exemption, and almost half of all respondents supported both requiring a minimum stay greater than one night and regulations in general.

Community feedback will help inform Planning Commission members prior to another joint workshop with the City Council in the future.

The workshop is at 6 p.m. in the Coeur d’Alene Public Library Community Room, 702 E. Front Ave.
